Juventus vs Everton August 1, 2013

They've been training at Stanford for about a week's time now. They've had double days every day since arriving in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. They've had tactics hammered into them by their manager, who just so happens to be turning 44 years old on this very day. They've scrimmaged against one another time after time with some exciting moments caught in between.

Now, Juventus get to face another team other than themselves.

The Old Lady begins the Guinness International Champions Cup against Everton tonight at the ballpark by the Bay, AT&T Park — a place that I may or may not have visited in the past four days for a completely depressing and pathetic baseball game even though my seats were totally awesome. It's the first game in what will be a three-game run in eight days for Juve, who will travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles over the weekend and then to Miami to meet up with the seven other teams and wrap up the tournament on Aug. 7.

With the Supercoppa just a little more than two weeks away, we're getting oh-so-close to when manager Antonio Conte wants his club to start getting into serious game shape (if they haven't gotten there already). And Wednesday night in San Francisco is just another step in that direction, even though a lot of the regular starters might not feature all that much at AT&T. But there's still the fact that they're in preparation stages — not only getting back to prime fitness, but working out the kinks and having the new signings adapt.

And what a better way to give Conte a birthday present that includes one of his favorite things — a win.

Atletico-MG x Atletico-PR | Fluminense x Fluminense | Portuguesa x Criciuma

Atlético-PR

Bayern Munich vs Sao Paulo July 31, 2013

There is no better way to prepare for the season than facing some of the top clubs in the world, and that is exactly what Bayern Munich continue to do this summer.

After facing a number of squads in July, including Barcelona, the Bundesliga club will host the 2013 Audi Cup, a four-team tournament with representatives from four elite leagues.

Manchester City and Milan will compete on one side of the bracket, while Bayern Munich take on Sao Paulo of Brazil.

Every match is certain to be exciting, so make sure you do not miss a minute of the action. Here is a look at the second of the two opening matches between the hosts and the challengers.

Manchester City vs Ac Milan July 31, 2013

Naturally, the story line that will be beaten to within an inch of its life in advance of Manchester City's upcoming friendly against AC Milan will be the renewal of acquaintances with Mario Balotelli.

The possibilities are more or less infinite.

Will Balotelli score a hat trick and reveal a unique t-shirt message from under his team shirt each time?

Will Balotelli be awarded a penalty, thus setting up a mind game with Joe Hart that fairly impersonates the old "immovable force vs. irresistible object" dilemma?

Will Balotelli get a red card in the opening minutes of the match just to show City how much he still loves them?

With apologies, I will pass on that whole line of inquiry. Mario Balotelli has as much relevance to Manchester City these days as Craig Bellamy does.

To me, the real story is the insanity of playing in Hong Kong on Saturday and in Germany on Wednesday. My body clock gets thrown out of whack if "The Mentalist" is shown an hour late.

Barcelona vs Lechia Gdansk July 30, 2013

Barcelona have a short amount of time to prepare for the season, which makes the upcoming friendly against Lechia Gdansk so important.

The match was postponed from its original date due the to health concerns of Tito Vilanova, who stepped down as manager of the La Liga club. He was replaced by Tata Martino, who will do his best to make an impact in a hurry after just meeting the whole squad.

Although his input will not likely be easily seen in the upcoming match, the club must show continued improvement over the course of this month heading into the year.

On the other side, Lechia Gdansk is a mid-table squad in Poland's top league which is looking to test itself against one of the best clubs in the world. A strong performance would give the team a lot of confidence going forward.

Both squads are looking for a strong performance in this friendly, so it is certain to be a competitive match throughout.

Kitchee vs Manchester United July 29, 2013

In the meantime, here's a join statement from Manchester United, the Hong Kong FA (HKFA) and Kitchee FC that explains why today's friendly might resemble a Division Three match from the 1970s.

"The pitch has suffered from torrential rainfall in the last week and has staged a number of games in a very short space of time. Wednesday's matches - Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City v South China - had their kick-offs delayed, only proceeding after being shortened to 40-minute halves.

It took a late goal by Wilfried Zaha, his first for United, to salvage a 2-2 draw against Cerezo Osaka on Friday, when Shinji Kagawa also scored against his former club after missing a penalty minutes earlier. Kitchee FC are also in pre-season and building up to the start of their new campaign at the end of August. They finished second to South China in Hong Kong's first division in 2012/13.

"The weather has continued to present problems for the pitch and the first consideration of both the HKFA and Manchester United has to be the safety of the players in such conditions.

"The club has consulted with the Hong Kong FA and has also taken advice from Kitchee FC. In the absence of any other suitable facility at such short notice, the open session has regrettably been cancelled."

Date, time and coverage: Monday 29 July, 13:00 BST (20:00 local).

USA 1-0 Panama Gold CUP Final 2013

USA wins the 2013 Gold Cup with a 1-0 win over Panama. Brek Shea score the tournament-winning goal for the Team USA.
Jurgen Klinsmann will not be on the sidelines for the U.S. after CONCACAF handed down a suspension for his conduct in their semifinal game. He reacted poorly to a questionable call and threw a ball, for which the referee ejected him. A CONCACAF committee decided late Friday night that Klinsmann would not be allowed to coach the USMNT in the final. Assistant Martin Vasquez will take his place.

Match date/time: Sunday, 4 p.m. ET

Venue: Soldier Field, Chicago, Ill.

Though the CONCACAF headliners–Mexico and the United States–entered this Gold Cup with experimental lineups and b-teams, the USMNT got here on cruise control against the third world because its veteran stalwarts picked up where Juan Ponce de León left off and found the fountain of youth. Landon Donovan, DeMarcus Beasley, and Eddie Johnson have also overcome boilerplate athlete duress (bargaining chip politics between soccer clubs, injury, divorce, hair dye); their leadership and chemistry is so apparent that I didn’t bat an eyelash when Klinsmann was suspended on Saturday from coaching this final because of his on-field temper tantrum in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Speaking of Wednesday, Panama overcame the best homefield advantage Cowboys Stadium has ever hosted—a sea of jeering paisanos with flags, drums, and sombreros. You know the old cliché of taking the home crowd out of the game? The Panama-Mexico semi-final was Panama fearlessly prodding a lion, getting it more and more riled up through the fruitless stoppage time. It took patience and focus–this is the best team non-Mexican or American Gold Cup contender we’ve ever seen.

F1 Hungary Grandprix 2013 July 28, 2013

Lewis Hamilton will start on pole for third successive race after another stunning qualifying lap yesterday nudged Sebastian Vettel and Romain Grosjean down the pecking order.
Even the Mercedes man could not quite believe what he had done but now starts a race he has won three times previously, in the prime spot.

LAP 3: Hamilton responds with the fastest lap of the race at 1.27.640. His lead on Vettel is back up to 0.8 seconds with Grosjean close behind in third. Big gap behind to Alonso in fourth.
It was Massa who ran into the back of Rosberg on the first lap after a good start for the Mercedes man. Both seem to be ok.
LAP 2: Button is up to eighth from 13th after a good start. Meanwhile Vettel takes 0.6 seconds out of Hamilton, whose lead was cut from 1.1 seconds after lap one to 0.5 seconds after the second lap.
LAP 1: GO! GO! GO! Good start for Hamilton as he gets away cleanly. Vettel seemed a bit slower to get off the line and he was challenged by Grosjean. Vettel retained second with Grosjean third. Alonso completes lap one in fourth with Massa fifth. There was contact between Rosberg and a Ferrari and the German is down in 12th.
The top eight all started on the soft tyres. Perez and Webber both on the mediums, as is Button.
1pm: Hamilton leads the field away for the formation lap, not long to go now.
12.52pm: The Hungarian national anthem has played around the Hungaroring and we are less than 10 minutes away from lights out. There looked to be a problem for Rosberg as the team called him back to the pits as he made his way towards the grid. The Mercedes driver made it onto the grid, though, albeit very late at just before 12.45pm.

Liverpool vs Thailand July 28, 2013

Liverpool will wrap up their preseason tour of Asia and Australia on Sunday. Having already triumphed in friendly matches against Indonesia XI and Melbourne Victory, the Reds will aim to end their trip to the Far East with a 3-0 record by defeating Thailand.

As the Reds continue to deal with the Suarez saga, work on their fitness and infuse new transfers Kolo Toure, Simon Mignolet and Iago Aspas into the lineup, Sunday's match will give Rodgers an excellent chance to gauge his club's progress before they return to Anfield to face Olympiacos in a friendly on Aug. 3.

Who: Thailand vs. Liverpool

When: Sunday, July 28, at 6:40 a.m. ET (11:40 a.m. UK)

Where: Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand

Real Madrid vs PSG July 27, 2013

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are set for a high-profile preseason match. The European powers are each looking forward to successful campaigns, and the clash should provide an early measuring stick for both clubs.

The Blancos are coming off a second-place finish in La Liga behind rival Barcelona. Although they weren't able to defend their title, Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. already have their sights set on a return to the top under new manager and former PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti.

PSG captured the Ligue 1 crown with a dominant showing that saw the club finish 12 points clear of its nearest competition. The Parisians will look to build off that success to make a deeper run in the Champions League.

Although the outcome of preseason matches have very little long-term impact, the elite level of competition should help both clubs in their quest for top form. So let's check out all the key information for the match, followed by a preview and prediction.

Valerenga vs Barcelona July 27, 2013

Norwegian side Valerenga hosts Barcelona on Saturday in what will be a midseason game for the hosts, and a second preseason game for the Spanish side.

As stated on Barcelona's website, the game was set up as part of of Valerenga's 100-year anniversary celebrations. The two sides have met in a similar situation before, with Barcelona coming out 4-2 winners in an encounter before the 2010/11 campaign.

One of the main points of interest for this match will be the arrival of Barcelona's new coach, Gerardo Martino.

The result won't be of major importance for either side, as Valerenga will be enjoying the celebrations, and the opposition, while Barcelona will be focused more on the fitness and well-being of their players.

Here is a complete preview of the match, with the latest team news and a projected lineup for Barcelona.

Valerenga Team News

It's been two weeks since Valerenga has played a match of any kind, and they will be using this Barcelona fixture as a tune-up for the return of Norwegian league play.

They play against Sarpsborg SK just two days after the Barcelona match.

Valerenga currently sits in eighth place in the Tippeligaen. They have a record of six wins, three draws and seven losses.

The Norwegian side will likely start with their strongest squad and then make changes in order to be ready for their next league game.

Barcelona Team News

Though Gerardo Martino is set to be presented to the media in Spain on Friday, it's likely that he could fly out to meet his side before their game on Saturday. If he does, it will be interesting to see what he may or may not do.

The Blaugrana played their first preseason game against Bayern Munich on Wednesday and lost 2-0. The game against Valerenga presents the second of six preseason games before the season kicks off.

With first-team players like Andres Iniesta, Pique and the newly signed Neymar still on holiday, Barcelona will likely line up as they did against Bayern Munich.

Barcelona Projected Lineup (4-3-3): Pinto; Martin Montoya, Marc Bartra, Javier Mascherano, Adriano; Jonathan dos Santos, Alex Song, Sergi Roberto; Alexis Sanchez, Lionel Messi, Cristian Tello

Valerenga: Mohammed Fellah

Mohammed Fellah recently made his way into the Norwegian national team setup, making his debut for the side in January of this year.

The attacking midfielder has missed most of the season so far through injury, but he may turn out against Barcelona after playing in Valerenga's last game.

Barcelona: Alex Song

Alex Song will have a lot to prove in his second season at Barcelona, and a good way start off a positive campaign is to play well in preseason.

The Cameroonian midfielder should have a fairly simple game, considering the opposition, but cannot take anything for granted. Any poor slips in a game like this could give his new boss cause to question whether he should remain at the club.

Manchester United vs Cerezo Osaka July 26, 2013

In a fast summer tour, the Red Devils will be taking on the J-League club Cerezo Osaka on Friday in a tune-up for the approaching season.

While getting in shape will remain the top priority for the Red Devils in this match, they undoubtedly would also like to earn a winning result. On Tuesday, David Moyes' squad fell 3-2 to the Yokohama F-Marinos.

With the Cerezo Osaka match scheduled for Friday, the Red Devils don't have a lot of time off. However, travel will be a bit easier than it was when they made the jump from Australia to Japan prior to the F-Marinos contest. It's just going to be a ride on the bullet train this time.

When: July 26 at 6 a.m. ET, 11 a.m. BST

Where: Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan

United conceded early and late goals to lose 3-2 to Yokohama F•Marinos on Tuesday in the third game of Tour 2013 presented by Aon. The Reds are likely to be in for a similarly tough test against Cerezo Osaka, who have won four of their last six J-League games, including a 2-1 win over the Marinos a fortnight ago, and are fifth in the table.

Ins and outs: Robin van Persie is fit after being taken off as a precaution in Yokohama with a thigh strain. David Moyes is set to make use of his full squad to cope with the heat in Osaka but expects Danny Welbeck to play. Michael Carrick (groin) is still a doubt, while Shinji Kagawa is almost certain to play some part against his former club.

Arsenal vs Urawa Red July 26, 2013

Arsenal will look to complete an undefeated Asia tour with one more friendly against Urawa Red Diamonds.

So far this preseason, the English club has already defeated the Indonesia Dream Team, Vietnam and Nagoya Grampus by a combined score of 17-2. The squad will look to keep that strong play going with a matchup against one of the top clubs in the J-League.

The Arsenal vs Urawa Red Diamonds Asia Tour friendly will be this Friday, July 26, 2013 (3:30 AM Pacific) at the Saitama Stadium. Arsenal will play in their 4th preseason match in Asia, where they have won 3 out of 3 games, while scoring a staggering 17 goals, and receiving 2. Arsene Wenger’s team will use Friday’s game as an opportunity to demonstrate which players are capable of belonging to the first-team squad.

Arsenal has had a very strong preseason on their trip to Asia. Yes they have scored 17 goals in 3 matches, but their opponents have not been high quality (tell that to Manchester United who has lost in Asia 2 out 3 games). Nonetheless, their match against Urawa Reds will allow coach Wenger to play youth players who are battling for a place in the first-team, rather than being loaned by the start of the season. With less than a month remaining until the start of the Premier League, it will be important to fix any remaining problems before the matches start to count.

When: Friday, July 26

Time: 11:30 a.m. BST

Where: Saitama Stadium, Japan

Chelsea vs Indonesia July 25, 2013

Jose Mourinho will take charge of Chelsea in the final match of the Asian leg of their pre-season tour, and the third since the 'Special One's' return to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues' warm-up matches have gone well, kicking off with a 1-0 win over the Singha All-Stars before beating a Malaysia XI 4-1 last week.

They take on the BNI Indonesia All-Stars with a chance to make it three out of three before jetting off to the States, and Sportsmail will have all the action live, including updates from our reporter in Jakarta, Matt Barlow.

Japan vs Australia July 25, 2013

Socceroos head coach Holger Osieck must re-structure his midfield if Australia is to have any sort of impact in their maiden East Asian Cup appearance. The Socceroos barely touched the ball throughout Saturday's 0-0 draw with hosts South Korea and only escaped with a point due to a phenomenal performance from goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.

Galekovic made a string of impressive saves to keep a clean sheet in Seoul but Osieck will undoubtedly have been disappointed in the failure of his midfielders, Mark Milligan, Dario Vidosic and Ruben Zadkovich, plus substitute Erik Paartalu, to gain any sort of ascendency against the South Koreans.

Osieck's decision to play Zadkovich for the entire 90 minutes was hard to fathom due to the Newcastle Jets captain's poor passing. On Saturday, Zadkovich regularly just thumped the ball long rather than trying to pick out a Socceroos teammate and Osieck has a number of options, who could replace the 27-year-old.

Matt McKay, one of the few experienced players in Australia's squad, could be shifted centrally after struggling to get involved as a left-winger versus South Korea, while Aaron Mooy deserves a chance after a strong campaign with A-League premiers Western Sydney Wanderers last season.

Osieck may also be tempted to play Archie Thompson as the central striker against Japan as the Melbourne Victory veteran seemed almost stranded on the right wing in the Socceroos East Asian Cup opener.

If Thompson does play down the middle and McKay is picked in central midfield, Mitch Nichols, Craig Goodwin, Adam Taggart and Connor Pain could all play a role out wide.

Mexico vs Panama July 24, 2013

Mexico and their fans will expect an El Tri win on Wednesday, simply because of their talent and their history in Gold Cup, but there isn't much evidence to suggest that Mexico are significantly better than they were when they lost their first game of the tournament. Panama was the better side in that game and will like their chances to pull another upset and advance to the final.

Mexico were poor throughout their quarterfinal match against Trinidad and Tobago, but the Soca Warriors didn't have the quality to put El Tri under serious threat. In the 84th minute, budding star forward Raul Jimenez turned in a free kick to send his side through and set up a rematch with Panama.

Gabriel Torres, who has been one of the best players in this tournament and Panama's most consistent attacking threat, scored both of the Canaleros' goals in their 2-1 win over Mexico back on July 7. They were less than impressive in their other two group stage matches, but they may have been holding something back with progression to the knockout stage virtually guaranteed after that win. They turned things up a bit in their quarterfinal, beating Cuba 6-1.

'Chepo' Jose Manuel de la Torre probably thought that he had his lineup for this tournament set, but will almost certainly be tempted to make some changes after his team's lackluster performance against T&T. Marco Fabian, Raul Jimenez and the Mexico defense have performed well, but Chepo has to figure out how to get more out of his midfield. Carlos Peña and Luis Montes, who were both subbed against T&T, have struggled in Gold Cup.

USA vs Honduras July 24, 2013

The United States will be big favorites in their Gold Cup semifinal against Honduras on Wednesday, but Los Catrachos are likely the stiffest test that Jurgen Klinsmann's team has faced thus far in the tournament. They won their group comfortably, locking it up before their final match. They then defeated Costa Rica, a team that fell to the U.S. in the group stage, in the quarterfinals.

Honduras were made to fight in that match and only managed one goal, with youngster Andy Najar, once eligible to represent the United States, firing through to the semifinals. They barely hung on in stoppage time against Costa Rica, but got through thanks to some good goalkeeping and good fortune.

Save for a rough stretch where Rodolfo Zelaya was turning them inside-out, the United States were in control for most of their match against El Salvador and dominated the final half hour in their 5-1 victory. Landon Donovan had the best game that he's had for club or country since returning from the soccer sabbatical that he took from early December until the end of March, while Eddie Johnson scored the clinching third goal mere seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Lyon vs Real Madrid July 24, 2013

The Real Madrid vs Lyon friendly will be this Wednesday, July 24, 2013 (12:00 PM Pacific) at the Stade de Gerland.  Real Madrid will face their first ‘top caliber’ rival of the preseason when they travel to Lyon.  In their last game, Carlo Ancelotti’s team defeated Bournemouth 6-0.  A top team like Lyon means the scoreline will not be anywhere near those six goals, therefore Wednesday’s match will be a tough friendly for both squads.

Real Madrid’s first preseason match against Bournemouth was expected to be an easy game for the Spanish club.  On Wednesday they will confront a huge change as they face a much difficult rival as Lyon.  The Merengues are still in their initial stages of the preseason, where they are still looking for incoming transfers, as well as what lineup and formation they will use under new coach, Ancelotti.  This is a team that wants to improve on their performance from last season, where the team deteriorated in the season’s final stages after a broken locker room caused by ex-coach Jose Mourinho.

Lyon will be a difficult opponent not only because they are a top Ligue 1 team, but because they have already played in three preseason matches as opposed to Real Madrid’s one.  The team coached by Remy Gardes has a very difficult season in front, where they will compete in the Champions League, and where they will attempt to surpass French giants PSG and Monaco.

Real Madrid vs Lyon Prediction
The Real Madrid vs Lyon match will be a great game between two top teams that need to improve in their upcoming season.  Considering the talent in both teams, expect the coaches to use starting lineups at the Gerland stadium.  The game will not be in its best quality as both squads are still in search for their best lineup and form, therefore it will be a low scoring game.  The Real Madrid vs Lyon match will end in a 2-1 win for the Merengues.

Bayern Munich vs Barcelona July 24, 2013

FC Barcelona kick-start their pre-season campaign tomorrow, as they prepare to travel to Germany to face Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in the 2013 Uli Hoeness Cup. Despite appointing Gerardo Martino as their new coach this morning, Barcelona travel to the Allianz Arena without a permanent coach, and will therefore be led by Jordi Roura and Rubi – in what may be their last match with the club.

After the unfortunate resignation of head coach Tito Vilanova, the players were in no fit state to travel to Poland on Saturday, where they would have otherwise started their pre-season against Lechia Gdansk (who last night kicked off their season with a 2-2 draw at home to Podbeskidzie). And as that match will now be played in a week’s time on the 30th, Barça now face the unenviable task of squaring off against the reigning European Champions in their first friendly match of 2013/14.

First-half

Barcelona (4-3-3): Pinto; Montoya, Bartra, Mascherano, Adriano; Song, JDS, Roberto; Alexis, Messi, Tello

Second-half

Barcelona (4-3-3): Oier; Patric, Sergi Gomez, Mascherano, Planas; Samper, Ilie, Espinosa; Nieto, Dongou, Roman

Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Lahm, Van Buyten, Dante, Alaba; Thiago, Kroos; Robben, Müller, Ribery; Mandzukic

South China vs Manchester City July 24, 2013

Manchester City's clash against South China in the Barclays Asia Trophy has been delayed by 10 minutes because of heavy rain in Hong Kong.

The game will now be 40 minutes per half, with Blues fans hoping to gain a first glimpse of new signings Alvaro Negredo, Stevan Jovetic and Jesus Navas.

The Asia Trophy returns to Hong Kong after a gap of two years but in the absence of defending Champions Chelsea, the honour falls to Manchester City, Sunderland and Spurs to battle it out against home side South China. City have enjoyed some mixed results in pre-season so far but despite conceding home advantage, Manuel Pellegrini's side are red hot favourites to take the win and progress straight through to Saturday's final.

Now you will see this game informations here.

And team news and all match team line ups:

he 2013 Premier League Asia Trophy will take place on 24 July and 27 July 2013, featuring Sunderland, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Hong Kong club South China.

The Asia Trophy is a friendly four-team pre-season tournament held in Asia every two years, and is contested by three Premier League football clubs and the home team.

Chelsea are the current holders after beating Aston Villa 2-0 in the 2011 final.

Manchester City v South China is the second semi-final of this year’s staging of the tournament.

While Manuel Pellegrini’s men should have too much quality for their opponents in this encounter, the locals will be more accustomed to the sweltering conditions, which could prove a factor given City are still undergoing their pre-season preparations.

Match coverage begins at 1pm on Sky Sports 1 this afternoon, kick-off 1.30pm.

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland is on Sky Sports 1 from 10.30am this morning.

Melbourne Victory vs Liverpool July 24, 2013

Tens of thousands of soccer fans are making their way to the MCG ahead of tonight's soccer match between English Premier League giants Liverpool and local A-League side Melbourne Victory.

A sea of Liverpool supporters took over Federation Square earlier in the day decked out in red and chanting club songs.

It is the first time Liverpool has toured Australia and a sell out crowd of around 95,000 will fill the MCG to watch the historic match.

"To be honest it's a great club, a massive club and it doesn't surprise me to see so many people here," one Liverpool fan said.

"To see them on the other side of the world in front of a massive crowd is just amazing."

Even those in the Victory camp are excited to see the reds in Australia.

None more so than lifelong Liverpool supporter, Melbourne coach Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou will put a line through one major event on his bucket list later today as his side plays host to the Merseyside club.

Coaching against the English Premier League giants caps off a remarkable few days, after steering the A-League All-Stars against Manchester United.

The sellout clash at the MCG is clearly a labour of love for Postecoglou.

He fell under the spell of Liverpool's 1970s and 1980s teams, boasting the likes of Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, then Ian Rush and Australian Craig Johnston

Postecoglou met Johnston on Tuesday - one of Australia's finest football exports speaking to Victory players about what they might expect.

It was also a massive moment for Postecoglou, knowing how far he and Australian football have come.

"But the English first division seemed a million miles away and for a young Aussie boy, you just didn't envisage how you could bring that world closer.

"When Craig went to Liverpool, it just got the hairs on the back of the neck rising and realising that dream could come true.

"We've got some players who are going to play the game of their life.

"We're involved in a game that's truly global. This game throws up unbelievable situations, and it has for me in the last seven days.

"I really enjoyed Saturday night. Obviously we got beaten by a world-class opponent, but I really enjoy the fact we know what world-class football looks like, and the Australian public got to see what world-class football looks like."

Tottenham vs Sunderland July 24, 2013

Tottenham Hotspur have played two preseason games already this summer, but their preparation for the new season really gets underway in earnest on Wednesday. Spurs play the first of two Barclays Asia Trophy games against Sunderland, then will play in either the final or third place game depending on the result.

All of the players who were given the first week of training off because of international commitments are back in the team, while Sandro and Younes Kaboul have recovered from their injuries to the point where they're back in full training. While they may not get to play on Wednesday, they're in the squad and very well could suit up.

Sunderland has had a busy transfer window and Roker Report's been all over it. If you have any passing interest in Sunderland, check them out. They don't have a post up on the game as of my posting, but it's worth noting that most of Sunderland's new signings are in their squad: Modibo Diakite, Valentin Roberge, El-Hadji Ba, David Moberg Karlsson, Cabral and Jozy Altidore. Emanuele Giaccherini wasn't in their initial squad, but he's training with them in Hong Kong, so he might play.

Squad

Goalkeepers
Hugo Lloris, Brad Friedel, Heurelho Gomes

Defenders
Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Jan Vertonghen, Michael Dawson, Steven Caulker, Younes Kaboul, Danny Rose

Midfielders
Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend, Gareth Bale, Tom Huddlestone, Mousa Dembele, Sandro, Scott Parker, Jake Livermore, Tom Carroll, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lewis Holtby, Clint Dempsey

Forwards
Jermain Defoe, Emmanuel Adebayor

You may notice that Paulinho and Nacer Chadli aren't in this squad. I assume their debuts will come during the Espanyol friendly after the team returns from Asia in August. Then again, they might just end up suiting up if they're fit and Andre Villas-Boas feels like letting them play. I can't imagine this preseason tournament has strict squad rules. That's not exactly clear. They're with the team, but they weren't in the "announced squad". If Giaccherini is playing, why can't they?

Projected Tottenham Hotspur lineup (4-3-3): Hugo Lloris; Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Jan Vertonghen, Michael Dawson, Kyle Walker; Scott Parker, Mousa Dembele, Lewis Holtby; Clint Dempsey, Emmanuel Adebayor, Andros Townsend

Gareth Bale has already been confirmed as out for this game with an unspecified knock. Aaron Lennon sat out the Colchester game for the same reason, so I'm not picking him in the starting XI. I hope that Younes Kaboul and Sandro get short run-outs, but they're probably not fit to start, though that's pure speculation on my part. This represents what I guess the starting XI would be if there was a competitive match tomorrow. Given that this is preseason, all bets are off and there's a very good chance we could see younger players.

Match date/time: Wednesday, 11 a.m. UK, 6 a.m. ET

Venue: Hong Kong Stadium, So Kon Po, Hong Kong

Yokohama F-Marinos vs Manchester United July 23, 2013

Manchester United are currently passing their offseason time with a little tour of Asia and Australia.

This jet-set group is in the transition between the two continents, as it heads to Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan, for a July 23 date against the Yokohama F-Marinos.

There is a good chance the Red Devils will be jet-lagged for this game. After all, if you'll notice the date from the club's tweet below, they aren't getting a lot of time off.

I don't know if the Red Devils will be bringing their surfboards with them to Yokohama, but they better bring their cleats.

Check out the vitals for this match, and then I'll take a look at three players worth keeping an eye on during this friendly.

Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. Overall my thought on Wayne is, if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we'll need him," Moyes stated during United's pre-season tour of Asia and Australia."I want to be able to play the two of them, I want to use Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez as well. I want to give myself as many options as possible."
This had led to offers from English club Chelsea and its attempts to purchase the striker.

The other player dominating Manchester's agenda is Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Moyes has repeatedly stated that he wants to improve the midfield and recently confirmed that the team has made a second offer to purchase Fabregas.

"As I understand it, Ed [Woodward, executive vice-chairman] had a response [to the first offer]," said Moyes. "We have made a second offer, but Ed is dealing with it rather than me.''

"When you are interested in good players, you want to give it every opportunity to materialize," he added. "I will hope things will continue to move forward. At this moment in time, I can only tell you that Ed Woodward is working hard to try and make the deals happen."

WWE Monday Night RAW July 22, 2013

Last week, five-time world champion CM Punk confronted his former friend and associate Paul Heyman following "the Mad Scientist" betraying Punk at the All-Stars Money in the Bank match. What resulted was a vicious collision with former UFC star and Heyman client Brock Lesnar, where the two stars brawled all over ringside before Punk took an F-5 through the announcer's table. Has this assault weakened Punk, or have Lesnar and Heyman ignited a fire within the man dubbed "The Best in the World?"

Royal Baby July 22, 2013

The former Kate Middleton gave birth to the couple's first child, a son, on Monday afternoon at a London hospital.

The birth was announced via a formal press release issued by Kensington Palace, which stated that the duchess "was safely delivered of a son" at 4:24 p.m., local time, weighing 8 lbs., 6 oz.

"The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth," the statement added. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."

"Right across the country and indeed right across the Commonwealth people will be celebrating and wishing the royal couple well," Prime Minister David Cameron told waiting reporters in front of 10 Downing Street. "It is an important moment in the life of our nation but I suppose above all it's a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy. It's been a remarkable few years for our royal family -- a royal wedding that captured people's hearts, that extraordinary and magnificent Jubilee and now this royal birth, all from a family that have given this nation so much incredible service, and they can know that a proud nation is celebrating with a very proud and happy couple tonight."

Arsenal vs Nagoya Grampus July 22, 2013

After two successful performances already on the preseason tour, Arsenal will look to keep up the momentum against Nagoya Grampus.

In matches against the Indonesia Dream Team and Vietnam, Arsenal have won by a combined total of 14-1. They will now face Nagoya Grampus, a Japanese squad that was managed by Arsene Wenger in the mid-1990s.

Nagoya Grampus have been in contention for a J-League title almost every year recently and will be a much tougher challenge than Arsenal's previous matches. Additionally, the club will have more cohesion than any all-star team.

The Premier League club has to be prepared for a tough fight in this one. Make sure you catch every second of the match by using this guide.

When: Monday, July 22

Time: 11:30 a.m. BST

Where: Toyota Stadium, Nagoya, Japan

Some pre-season friendlies are more 'friendly' than others, and there's no doubt there's a huge amount of mutual respect between the two teams - and managers - that will go head-to-head in the Toyota Stadium here in Nagoya on Monday.
Grampus Nagoya coach Dragan 'Piksi' Stojkovic played under Arsène Wenger for nearly two years when the Frenchman managed the J-League side in 1995 and 1996, and now the Serbian former Yugoslav international is in charge of the team himself - a position he's held since 2008.

The two were reunited at a press conference in Nagoya on Thursday afternoon, and it's clear that the 48 year-old Grampus coach holds Wenger in the highest esteem.

"Arsène Wenger is the best example for a football manager," the ex-Red Star Belgrade and Marseille man said. "He is intelligent, he loves football - it's a real passion for him - and he's very loyal. He works for and loves his club 110 per cent.
"He's somebody who has a gift: he can see something that other people don't. This is the power of Arsène Wenger.
"He had a lot of influence on me to become a coach. This is not a joke, it's a very serious story.

"Of course to be Arsène Wenger is impossible, to replace him is very difficult, but to follow the way he works - yes I agree absolutely with that. This is my way of working too, and exactly what I'm doing with my team is practically the same as what he is doing with Arsenal. He is the best example for me and I want to follow that direction.

"So I was really lucky to work with him as a player, because I recognised how football can be really, really nice under his control. With other managers though it was very hard."

'Piksi' has had his own success already. In 2010 he led Nagoya Grampus to their first ever J-League title - surpassing even Wenger's achievements with the club. Then, the following year, he won the Japanese Super Cup - something Grampus had only managed once previously, under Wenger in 1996.

So it's no surprise that the Arsenal boss was equally glowing in his appraisal of Stojkovic: "He is a young manager, so we have lots of hope for him. He has his future in front of him. He's 48 and has had his first positive experience.
"I believe the next five or six years will decide the course of his career as a manager. As a player he obviously proved himself as one of the best.

"He has had a good start as a coach and now it's important that his next stage is a positive one, because a career is about continuity. He has had a strong start, now he must take advantage of that. He has made a reputation as a manager, now his next decision, his next step, will be important. But I believe he has the qualities for an exceptional career. I hope he achieves it."
There were even questions in the press conference, from local journalists, as to whether 'Piksi' could one day tread the same path as Wenger did, and leave Grampus Nagoya to become Arsenal manager.

"Well, I have not finished yet!" Wenger responded. "Anyway, it will be the people on the Arsenal board who will decide that, not me."

As for Stojkovic – the man who won the Champions League as a player in 1993 – he was relatively coy, saying only "why not?" before adding with a smile "I think I will have to wait 10 years for the chance!"
Arsenal have waited more than 10 years for the chance to play in Japan again. It's 45 years, to be exact, since the Gunners were last in this country. They won three out of three friendlies back in 1968, the last match of which was played in front of a then record crowd in the country of 70,000.

Another sell-out is expected this Monday at Grampus Nagoya's 45,000-capacity Toyota Stadium, as Arsenal look to make it three straight wins on the Asia Tour 2013.

The goals have been flying in so far - Olivier Giroud (five) and Chuba Akpom (three) are the goalscorers in form, but eight different players have got on the scoresheet in the two matches, and each of the 24-man touring squad has featured at some point.

Arsenal have stepped up their preparations in the last few days, and with good reason. Grampus are exactly halfway through their league season, and are 12th out of 18 in the J-League at the moment. They beat bottom team Oita Trinita 2-1 away in their last match on Wednesday, for their third win in the last four.

Anzoategui x FC Porto 21-07-2013

Fabiano Freitas; Fucile, Maicon, Mangala e Alex Sandro; Fernando, Carlos Eduardo e Defour; Varela, Ghilas e Iturbe.

Três jogos, 23 golos e marcados e ainda nenhum sofrido. Segue assim, convincente, a pré-temporada do F.C.

Honduras vs Costa Rica July 21, 2013

The most evenly matched quarterfinal in Gold Cup is the last one. Honduras and Costa Rica meet in Baltimore for the right to face the USA-El Salvador winner.

A strong start to the Gold Cup has given way to a couple of lackluster performances for Costa Rica, and they're slight underdogs against Honduras in what will likely be the best of the quarterfinal matches.

The Ticos downed Cuba 3-0 to start the tournament, but only managed a 1-0 win over Belize and lost to the United States while Jurgen Klinsmann was sitting some of his top players. Honduras, on the other hand, beat two much tougher opponents in Haiti and El Salvador to start the competition. They dropped their most recent game against Trinidad and Tobago, but only after they had already clinched first place in Group B.

Honduras have made one change to their squad from the group stage, bringing in Erick Norales for Johnny Palacios. Costa Rica have opted to make no changes to their team for the knockout stage.

Match date/time: Sunday, 7 p.m. ET

Venue: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Md.

US MOTOGP 2013 July 21, 2013

Stefan Bradl has pole for the 2013 US MotoGP Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. The 23-year-old LCR Honda rider posted 1:21.176 to grab his first ever pole position, after finishing third and second in the morning's free practice sessions.

Honda locked out the front row of the grid, with championship leader Marc Marquez and Alvaro Bautista putting Repsol Honda and Honda Gresnini second and third respectively. Marquez's second place time was only 0.017s behind Bradl.

Marquez led the way in the first practice session on Saturday, with 1:21.568 to lead Valentino Rossi on his Yamaha and Bradl, with Bautista and Britain's Cal Crutchlow rounding out the top five. The 20-year-old Spaniard is on an understandable high after romping to a second win of the season at the Sachsenring in Germany in the last race, in his MotoGP debut.

And he retained top spot through the second practice session of the day, clocking 1:21.680 to beat Bradl's 1:21.890. Crutchlow and Bautista finished third and fourth in that session, with Spain's Dani Pedrosa coming in fifth.

A word, though, about Pedrosa and defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo. The Repsol Honda and Yamaha riders were doubts for this race, with collarbone injuries at Germany. Following physiotherapy for Pedrosa and emergency surgery for Lorenzo, both riders were confirmed for the race pending medical evaluations, which happened trackside on Friday.

Pedrosa sat out the first and third practice sessions but produced blisteringly fast laps when critical and will start the race from seventh, with a best of 1:21.728.

Lorenzo, meanwhile, has kept a low profile through most of the weekend so far, with a best of 1:22.221 in practice and 1:21.453 in qualifying; he starts sixth, which should make the race very interesting indeed.

Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso finished eighth and Tech 3 Yamaha's Bradley smith was ninth with Nicky Hayden 10th on his Ducati.

The 3.602km Laguna Seca circuit consist of 11 turns. The circuit record lap belongs to Pedrosa, who posted 1:21.229 last year. The 2012 race was won Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner, with Lorenzo second and Pedrosa third. This year's pole position man, Bradly, finished seventh.

Marquez leads the championship with 138 points. Pedrosa is two points behind and Lorenzo a further 11. Crutchlow and Rossi round out the top five, with 107 and 101 points respectively.

USA vs El Salvador July 21, 2013

The United States looked all set for a quarterfinal matchup with Martinique until Cuba spoiled the party, defeating Belize by four goals to grab the last quarterfinal spot. That meant that the United States, instead of facing the weakest team in the quarterfinals, would have to face a reasonably formidable El Salvador side in the Gold Cup quarters.

El Salvador are hardly world beaters -- they dropped points to Guyana in the third round of World Cup qualifying and missed the Hex -- but they're certainly stronger than Cuba and Martinique. They've played well so far in this tournament, drawing fellow quarterfinalists Trinidad and Tobago and defeating Haiti. They nearly grabbed a draw from Honduras, which could have sent them through in first or second place, but conceded a winner to Jorge Claros in stoppage time.

The United States has called in four new players for the quarterfinals, per tournament rules, although they're the only team to call in more than one new reinforcement. Alan Gordon, Eddie Johnson and Matt Besler did not play for their MLS teams on Saturday and will be available right away, while Omar Gonzalez played on Saturday night and will join up with the team for the semifinals if they defeat El Salvador.

Who Jurgen Klinsmann starts is anyone's guess. He said that he would play his best team against Costa Rica, but opted to make some unexpected changes and give a rest to a few of his starters. Besler and Johnson have established themselves as regulars for the main U.S. squad and probably have a better shot at starting than Gordon does. Gordon has a knack for scoring or assisting late in matches when brought off the bench and he's probably been called into the team to fill that role.

Match date/time: Sunday, 4 p.m. ET

Venue: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Md.

British Open 2013 July 21, 2013

The 2013 British Open Championship moved on to its third day with still lots of holes to be contested on the extremely difficult layout at Muirfield Golf.

Miguel Angel Jiminez, who served as the vice captain for the Europeans in last year Ryder Cup, took the clubhouse lead after shooting an even-par 71 in the second round.

Yet, the top spot on the leaderboard is far from being secured. Former world's No.1 Lee Westwood had a solid day on the field Friday as he shot a 3-under 68 to jump into a four-way tie with Henrik Stemson, Dustin Johnson and Tiger Woods, who has put himself in prime position despite dealing with elbow problems throughout the first two rounds of competition.

Disappointments and frustrations are all over the playing field with two-time champion Rory McIlroy not making it to the next round after shooting a 79 in the first round and 75 in the second round. Other high-profile players that did not make it to the third day of play are Vijay Singh, Justin Rose, Nick Watney, and Jim Furyk.

Third Round

The third round will be as crucial as the last day of the tournament as competitors attempt to finish the day on a high note and keep themselves in great spot for Sunday's championship play. Of course, all eyes will be on Woods, who hasn't been doing great in round three and four of the last six majors tourney he participated. According to ESPN, Woods usually shot better in the first two rounds with combined score of 11-under. However, his performance faltered in the last two rounds, finishing 30 shots worse over that stretch.

T.V Coverage of the 2013 British Open will start at 4:00 a.m ET on ESPN.

Bournemouth vs Real Madrid July 21, 2013

Estadio: Goldsands Stadium.

Posible alineación del Real Madrid: Diego López, Carvajal, Pepe, Nacho, Coentrao, Modric, Khedira, Ozil, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo e Higuaín.

Chelsea vs Malaysia XI July 21, 2013

Chelsea's Asian preseason tour moves to Malaysia as the Blues take on a Malaysia XI side on Sunday.

The club had a bit of a hard time against Singha All-Stars, but its 1-0 win was much better than the 1-0 loss Manchester United suffered against the same team earlier this summer.

With Chelsea making some moves this summer and welcoming in players from loan, the preseason is a great chance for Jose Mourinho to get an idea of which players he'll be calling upon in the upcoming season. Everybody knows how important the likes of Juan Mata, Ashley Cole, Petr Cech, Eden Hazard and Ramires will be. There are a lot of players, though, whose roles in the club are still up in the air.

Although you can't read too much into preseason friendlies, it's much better for supporters to see the club show some cohesion on the pitch and the younger players start establishing themselves.

Here's the viewing info for Chelsea's upcoming friendly with Malaysia XI, followed by three players to watch.

When: Sunday, July 21, at 2:45 BST (9:45 a.m. ET)

Mexico vs Trinidad and Tobago July 20, 2013

El Tri will expect a win, but Trinidad and Tobago have plenty of dangerous attacking players and have already sprung an upset over Honduras in this competition.

A less than impressive group stage for Mexico has given way to the quarterfinals and stronger opponents. El Tri lost their only game against a true quality opponent in this tournament, Panama, while defeating a couple of weaker opponents in Canada and Martinique. Trinidad and Tobago, likely somewhere between Panama and the teams Mexico beat, should provide a solid test,

T&T emerged from the tournament's deepest group in second place, edging out El Salvador on goals scored. They were surprisingly poor in a loss to Haiti in their second match of the tournament, but surprisingly turned in a good performance in a 2-0 win over Honduras to get to this point.

Mexico will expect to win in front of a large partisan crowd, but nothing El Tri's done in 2013 -- either the main squad or this squad -- should lead anyone to count out T&T.

Panama vs Cuba July 20, 2013

Cuba scored a stoppage time goal to clinch the last quarterfinal place in Gold Cup, edging out Martinique. They'll have a tougher time with Panama than they did with Belize.

Panama got off to a fast start in the Gold Cup, defeating Mexico in their first game, but they've been less than impressive since. They struggled to beat Martinique 1-0 and drew a poor Canada team 0-0 knowing that a draw was good enough to clinch first place in Group A for them. Cuba have had a rockier road to the quarterfinal, but could give Panama some trouble based on the Canaleros' previous struggles.

To this point, Cuba have been lucky to avoid defections of any of their players to the United States. The government has loosened its grip on people a bit, but players were still expected to leave the Cuba camp before their last Gold Cup game. Maybe the prospect of playing in the knockout stage changed some minds. In any event, Cuba have their best players available.

However, that might not do them much good. While they were good in a 4-0 win over Belize to clinch this quarterfinal spot, Belize are by far the weakest team in the tournament. They had a bit less luck against the United States and Costa Rica, who beat them handily. Panama are on a similar level to those two teams and should be considered heavy favorites.

Previa Stuttgart vs Valencia. Partido amistoso.

Dortmund: ter Stegen - Daems, Brouwers, Stranzl, Korb - Kramer, Xhaka, Rupp, Younes - Raffael, Kruse

Gladbach: Weidenfeller - Großkreutz, Hummels, Sokratis, Schmelzer - Sahin, Bender, Reus, Gündogan, Hofmann - Lewandowski

Liverpool vs Indonesia XI July 20, 2013

With Suarez elsewhere, Iago Aspas, procured from Celta Vigo, leads the line against an Indonesia XI, while there's also a start for the former Sevilla winger, Luis Alberto. Interesting times in attack and interesting times at the back: Kolo Toure starts alongside Daniel Agger, reportedly a target for Barcelona while Rodgers, fully aware that Pepe Reina is an accident waiting to happen, has nabbed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland. He starts in goal. Reina is off to join Rafa Benitez at Napoli. Now if they could just persuade him to take Stewart Downing as well...

Liverpool: Mignolet; Johnson, Toure, Agger, Enrique; Lucas, Gerrard; Alberto, Coutinho, Downing; Aspas. Subs from: Jones, Assaidi, Henderson, Spearing, Allen, Borini, Sterling, Kelly, Skrtel, Flanagan, Wisdom, Robinson, Ibe.

Kick-off: 2.30pm BST.

lmost 90,000 fans are expected to pack out the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta for the Reds visit.

The match is Liverpool’s second pre-season friendly of the summer, after beating Preston North End before leaving England last weekend.

Steven Gerrard plays his first game since undergoing shoulder surgery at the back end of last season, partnering Lucas in midfield.

Following Pepe Reina‘s departure to Napoli, it will be interesting to see who Gerrard passes the captain’s armband to if he is substituted. Our money’s on Daniel Agger.

New signings Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas all start today, whilst Liverpool’s bench is very youthful.

Last weekend Arsenal beat Indonesia 7-0. The team is a selection of the country’s top footballing talents.

Kick-off in Jakarta is 8.30pm local time (2.30pm UK) and is live on ESPN UK as well as streaming through the club’s official website (premium subscription required)

England vs Australia July 20, 2013

Sir Ian Botham reputation as a tipster lags well behind those he acquired with bat and ball, but his prediction of 10-0 double whitewash by England no longer looks like the ravings of a misguided patriot after another abject batting performance by Australia.
In front of second full house here on another sparkling summer’s day, Australia capitulated to 128 all out in conditions that simply screamed runs.
Then, when England decided to bat again rather than enforce the follow-on, they missed the chance of an early breakthrough when an edge by Joe Root off Shane Watson passed between first slip and the wicketkeeper.

It was a break England should have capitalised on to put the game beyond Australia, but as in the first Test, they struggled to summon the killer instinct, scarcely playing a shot save the slap to cover that did for Kevin Pietersen.
Instead, Peter Siddle found a bustling rhythm from the Pavilion end to dismiss Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Pietersen in the space of 16 balls to keep England, their lead extended to 264 by the close, just this side of the horizon.

Australia’s batting was identified as their weak suit before this series began, though nobody suspected how bad it was until they were 117 for nine in their first innings at Trent Bridge.
There they were rescued by a teenager making his debut and in the second innings by a veteran making a comeback, but that leaves a lot of dead wood in between, something turned gleefully into kindling yesterday by England’s bowlers.
It left Darren Lehmann, Australia’s new coach, cutting a lone, disconsolate figure on the visitors’ balcony, which looked like an isolation ward. Whatever the malaise he inherited with this team the prospect of a cure seems distant.
There could be no excuses for Australia either, after Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann gave them a pointer as to how to score when they added 48 breezy runs in 40 balls for the last wicket.
With Swann later taking five for 44, the visitors’ surrender was so tame that England’s continued possession of the Ashes looks as if it will happen with minimum fuss.
For anyone wanting the semblance of a contest it was a depressing display and its meekness made a case for Alastair Cook enforcing the follow-on. Although there was overwhelming logic to England batting again with the weather set fair, the bowlers in need of a recharge and a dusting pitch wearing by the session, Australia looked so shot as to be ripe for another rout.
The rot did not set in immediately as the opening pair added 42 without undue alarm. Shane Watson, a brilliant driver of the ball, had even looked dominant, taking 21 runs off two overs from James Anderson and Tim Bresnan.
But a switch to the Pavilion end for Bresnan saw him nip one down the slope into Watson and win not just an lbw for himself but probably one for Swann too, after Watson reviewed, apparently at the insistence of Chris Rogers, an lbw that always looked dead.
For with one review left, Rogers seemed loathe to request the other when he missed a thigh-high full toss from Swann after lunch. Had he done so, he would have been reprieved after Hawk-Eye had the ball missing the top of leg-stump.
It was arguably the worst ball to get a wicket in Test history, though David Gower’s dismissal of Kapil Dev for 116 in Kanpur 28 years ago was reputed to be pretty appalling. High full tosses can present problems when bowled by pace bowlers but Rogers should have been able to pick any spot on the leg-side boundary and hit it there.
England bowled as they mostly do, with discipline and skill, but this was no overwhelming force blowing away batsmen unable to cope with pace, swing or spin.
The pitch is dusting in places, which allows the seam to grip occasionally for pace bowlers and spinners, but it is no minefield.
Having seen his rank full toss hit the jackpot, Swann wheeled away, getting some to grip off the pitch and others to leap from the footholes. One theory why Mitchell Starc was left out of this match was that Australia’s selectors feared the rough he might create for Swann.
With Bresnan luring Phillip Hughes into a wild slash and another wasted review by Australia, Swann was left to work his way through the remainder of the order. He began with Usman Khawaja, who looks a walking wicket providing you can keep him pegged down for an over or two.
Dropped by Trott at slip off Swann, Khawaja never looked comfortable and his demise, caught by Pietersen after miscuing a lofted drive, was entirely predictable.
Steve Smith followed next, his technique of playing defensively with bat well in front of pad undone when the ball bounced more than expected to rebound off the splice into Ian Bell’s hands at short leg.
Swann then deferred to Broad for the wicket of Michael Clarke, lbw to one that flirted with hitting leg-stump but which, with no reviews left, he could not query.
Ashton Agar, now seemingly permanently promoted to eight, tried to add responsibility to his repertoire but Brad Haddin refused his pursuit of a quick leg bye. Prior’s quick thinking and even quicker throw beat the teenager’s hasty retreat to the bowler’s end.
Although there did not appear to be much reverse-swing, Anderson made out as if the ball might be
