Tony Awards 2013 June 9, 2013

The Tony Awards race is on between two of the year's most celebrated musicals: "Matilda: The Musical" and "Kinky Boots."

The Cyndi Lauper-scored "Kinky Boots" is up for a leading 13 Tony Award nominations, while the British import, "Matilda: The Musical," is close behind with 12. So, a lot of the evening will be guessing which of these two newcomers will pick up honors.

The 67th annual Tony Awards ceremony will be broadcast Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS. That's the same on both coasts, with the show airing live on the East Coast and three hours later on the West Coast.

This year's Broadway season featured big musical blockbusters ("Matilda," "Kinky Boots"), critically acclaimed playwrights (Richard Greenberg, Chistopher Durang) and a handful of celebrities (Tom Hanks, Sigourney Weaver, Scarlett Johansson).

Tony Awards 2013 nominees: Complete list

Sunday's program will feature an impressive list of presenters that will include the aformentioned stars as well as: Jesse Eisenberg, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sally Field, Zachary Quinto, Jon Cryer and Anna Kendrick. Neil Patrick Harris returns as host.

Boxing champion Mike Tyson will also put in appearance at Sunday's ceremony. The former athlete brought his one-man show to Broadway this season, but he didn't receive a nomination.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and director Hal Prince will be part of a tribute to "The Phantom of the Opera," which is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Broadway this year.

Culture Monster will be covering Broadway's biggest night live, with reporters on the ground at Radio City Musical Hall in New York. We'll also have a steady stream of online updates of the winners as well as a running commentary on the telecast.
